As an avid painter who has had a lot of painting experience I'll give unto you advice that a friendly GW staff member gave me.

Painting the Details:

1. Use the right brush, a thick brush wont get the job done right but a thinner one will. The citadel fine detail brush is almost perfect for the job, though I would personaly advise using a finer detail brush as well [if you can]. (I'm currently using a very fine detail brush).

2. Practice. It is all well and good having the right tools for the job but they're pretty useless if not used correctly. Don't be dishearened if you don't manage to get something perfect the first time, just keep trying until you get it right. Also, practice by painting large details on models (banners with sculpted bits are great for this), then work on painting the finer details of models until you can paint freehand designs.

3. Patience. Having spent more than half an hour painting the highlights on a Space Marine backpack (and sculpted skull thing) for a commision, I can understand how frustrating it is when you are having to be extra careful and are spending a lot more time on one thing than you thought you would. Just take your time and focus on the job at hand, you will soon have nicely painted details.

Hope this helps,

Cal
