| Post subject: | How to paint wood grain |
Hey everyone, I'm a little confused as to how you get the effect of wood grain on a smooth surface. Is there any technique in particular I should be trying, or any helpful tips to make it easier? I attempted it this mroning and it just looked like some crooked lines painted on, hardly convincing. Any advice or suggestions? Help would be greatly appreaciated.

If the surface is flat you really need to either carve the detail in or just paint a rough 3D grain effect. This might help. http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=2670 But have in accound that trees are not made of plank boards, so its not the exact same thing. |

What are you making? I gave my Bilbo an actual wood floor to make sure I got the grain right. Any time you can, I would recommend putting balsa or bass wood onto a surface and painting that instead of trying to bake a believable pattern without it. |

I'm not making anything actually, I'm trying to paint the wooden areas on my Morannon Orc Commanders.

Ahh... Yes, that would be difficult. 
I don't know... There used to be an article on it on TLA, but I haven't been there since before the big shift. There is a bit on it here in the part on painting the back of the WoMT shield, but I don't know if it'll help. |

Take a look at the masterclass in the new white dwarf, it has a step-by-step on a woodgrain spearshaft you might find useful. |
