Post subject:  Best way to paint a white cloak
Hey,

I'm thinking about painting one of my mini's with a white cloak, but I wanted to know what a good whay to go about that was. What colors would I use to create depth? Would I just go fortress grey to start and then work my way up to white? Let me know what you think. Thanks

Always thin down the paint. white NEVER looks good with paint applied straight from the pot(I've tried) :oops:

White looks fine if you simply do a three(or more)-step layering on the cloak, starting with a fairly light grey.
I'm not sure about blending, as I havent done it before.

And remember to thin that paint! :-D

You could also start with a bleached bone base coat or similar ivory colour.

The colour you should start from depends on who you are painting, and what effect you are trying to achieve. You can start with any colour you like really, and just progressively add lighter highlights until it is as white as you want it to be. Bleached bone is always a good one for an ivory-white cloak, but by no means the only way it can be done. A cool blue colour could be good as well if you want an icy-white looking cloak.

it depends what colour you want. for an ivory/gandalf type cloak i start with kommando khakil through bleached bone up to white.
for a bluish cloak i use space woilves grey shaded with shadow grey highligted with white.

You can also try painting it white, or almost-white, then using progressive layers of really really thinned paint to shade it down. Then just do the final bit in white.

White is one of those things you have to create an illusion of white.

First things first, decide if you want a blue-ey white, or a grey-ey white.

From black undercoats.

If grey, start with codex Grey, if blue, start with... is it shadow grey?

then astronomican. 1-3 coats.

Then white on edges. 2-4 coats.

Thin ALL paints down & be patient with it. White is not easy.

In one of the BGiME issues, there was something about painting different whites.

It mentioned warm whites, neutral whites and cool whites.

Neutral and Cool whites are doe in the way that Baldrick described, and Warm white is done similarly, using Kommando Khaki (or was is Graveyard Earth... can't remember) and adding white to it.

There's also "linen" white, or the "unbleached linen" look, which has a very slight greenish tinge. Think of hospital whites.

Do you want a warm white or a cool white?

If you want a warm white, add white and a light skin tone colour to black to make the darkest shade.

For a cool white just mix white with black for the darkest shade.

What works quite well is to paint it all pure white first. To start off with just black will not help at all.
Once you paint it all white, start by filling in the recesses (shadowed parts) with your chosen grey colour. (preferably a medium toned grey) Then you should then keep adding more white and start building up the layers and bring it out to the tops of the folds on the cloak until you got pure white.

Do not make bleached bone your darkest colour because it is not dark enough.

Hmmm this gives me a bit to think about. I will try a ew o the methods on some models and see what I like best, though I am thinking a 'warm' white will be the way i go. Thanks or all the responses.
