Spreadsheet for me.

Mainly for budgets, actually. I like to know exactly how much of my money I've spent on the hobby. It's also nice having all my models catalogued.

I've been collecting since April 2012:

Total models: 449
Total completed: 258

Total spent (on models): $1654.40 NZD. (Yeesh)

I buy wooden display trays from a website called "Warbases" where I categorise different types of troops into different trays. Very useful. I would recommend it to everyone.

Well if you have a glass display case with shelves that would be the best way to categorize your miniatures but since not many people have this case then a word or excel document will suffice

I have around 350 painted figures in display cabinets, boxes of unfinished figures.
The best way to catalogue IMO is Mini Mans fantastic PDF, i spent 3 days over Christmas checking off what i have and need.

I used to keep track of everything in my head and had my collection in one big box, it worked for a little bit but my collection has grown too large. Now I record what figures I have in the collecting guide, also I have started an excel sheet to record what I buy/trade/sell to make sure I keep within my hobby budget

My painted figures are displayed on shelves or in dioramas

My unpainted miniatures are dived into army types and grouped into units then stored in cheap plastic craft boxes, I record what figures are in each group on a little card which is then color coded for easy reference

Attached is an example from one of my mordor boxes
I hope this helps

Still looking for a cheaper way to store painted ones without using carry case. Was thinking about some sort of storage boxes but not found any suitable yet.

An IKEA bookcase?
The floor?
Make your own carry case using the guide in tomes of wisdom?
