Hey all, I'm just getting started painting some Haradrim. I'm trying to stay away from GW's purple scheme as much as possible and so far it's working just fine.

One thing I am stumped on though is what to do with the bases. I don't think my typical fine grit will do for a sandy surface and I doubt actual sand will stick very well. What do you guys do when it comes to these dudes?

I know a Pelennor Fields theme could work, but I already have Gondor, Rohan and Isengard armies on lush looking bases. Some variety would be good.

Well.. I have an old guide from the GW site where they explain how to create terrain for different regions.
For deserts they glue sand onto the base and paint it black.
Then drybrush with Scorched Brown, then Dark Flesh, then Bestial Brown, then Bubonic Brown and at last a drybrush with Bleached Bone. Finishing touches and accents with Skull White.

Hope that helps. :)

Rognarr I have been searching for that guide for ages. Do you happen to have it saved, or still have the pictures of the bases?

I have it saved yep, but it's in German. It has the pictures nevertheless and the names of the paints are the same. If you want it, maybe pm me your mail and I'll send it to you.

Check this example for WWII African campaign gaming:

I've just been trying to decide which style I want to use for my own Haradrim. I am leaning to a mostly Mauritania-style with some Egypt/Sahara elements.

personally I went for a stargate theme recently with my harad, you see in my wip...

anyways for basing, I tend to go black undercoat on the sand then thick drybrush of snakebite leather and lighter drybrush of desert yellow

Personally, I've always had good results with plain dirt on white glue. I've never even felt it needed painting afterward.
