grass skirts are flammable and caves have been known to collapse

I was disappointed that when I finally got around to closely inspecting my new Sauron Finecast miniature that a bubble during casting has taken out most of his fingers as if he's been carelessly using a wood chipper. Now where is that green stuff, sculpting tool and an hour or so to repair a miniature I paid £25 for... Other than that quite impressive. Guess I was just unlucky.... :(

I just bought Grimgor Ironhide, a Warhammer Orc hero. There was a lot of work removing the flash from the parts; as much as you would expect from a metal miniature (the fingernail flash removal talk is BS, you do need a hobby knife to clean it). The mini was very finely detailed, at least as much as one could expect from a metal one, which is good.

At the moment I'm not yet sure what I should think of the new casting technique and material. I will paint the miniature and see how it behaves while painting. There was one ugly bubble in the underside of his jaw, which is not visible during gaming but kind of disappointing anyway. At the moment I think the old multi-part plastics (from WHFB and 40k) are better quality than these Finecast ones, but I will have to paint it and maybe get a couple of other minis to really judge the result.

The initial impression is that it's quality is lower than old metals, better than plastics (I sneeze better looking stuff out of my nose than the plastic Wood Elves, for example), but we are probably in the beta testing phase at the moment. Considering the quality of the Foundation paints and washes, I have quite a lot of faith in GW's chemistry department, so maybe these resin models will be good at some point in the near future too.

From what I have seen and given their make up (Plastic and resin mix) they seem more like a high end plastic kit. I have seen a couple painted up and can't really tell the difference between the metal and the resin. I like painting plastic kits as the paint finish tends to last longer. I am tempted by the Beserkers if only because I like Beserkers but I do have a few metals and am glad I got them but there is one sculpt of them I dont have. Hmm, decisions decisions!

My first finecast model was Logan Grimnar from 40K since none of the lotr figures that I don't already own interest me. For all of the advantages of the new resin material (finer detail, easier to work with and better adherence of the paint) the disadvantage of the overall cast quality is a major problem for me. I'm sure gw will replace any defective miniatures but I'd be very reluctant to buy online or in large numbers.

Thankfully most of the flaws were fixable with some greenstuff but for £14.50 I expect better.

Then email the web trolls, if you attach a photo they normally send out a replacement product straight away otherwise return to sender with a note. (return to sender = free post)

Heheh. I just read on Warseer and Frothers about the new minis melting slightly from the sun beaming through the window at GW Bath. Brilliant. :yay: Quality Control and product testing before a major release obviously wasn't a high priority it would seem.

I'm waiting for things to calm down a bit and ensure that the production quality has leveled off but I think a Mordor Troll Chief will probably be my first. I've been wanting one for years but plan on modifying him to match the armor changes I've been making to my other Trolls. I think doing conversion work on the resin figures is going to be much easier than on the metal ones.
