Using the very cool Keyword Search tool at the LotRProject:

http://lotrproject.com/statistics/books/keywordsearch

I have created the following chart that will graphically show you each chapter in which Bilbo starts to loose faith, and how badly that slip is.

Sorry, but I don't quite understand what this site does? Where or when does Bilbo loose faith in what?

I can think of many things he could be said to have had doubts about but not sure where this thread is going - could you clarify what is meant by 'loss of faith'? Thanks.

...mostly in humor.

But it struck me that he mentioned thinking warmly of bacon (and eggs, but they don't matter in the face of bacon) each time his spirits sank. So...

As for the site itself, it has all the text of the books and has passed it through much processing. It's not a copyright issue because they don't actually present the text itself, but all the words are in the database. So you can look for word trends among other things.

I must be too old for this sort of thing - I still don't get it. :(

Don't sweat it...there's a lot of meme on the web that I am exposed to that I just don't really find the humor in myself.

For some reason, the whole "bacon == happiness" thing does strike me just right though. Sort of on par with Chuck Norris jokes I guess. And I have recently seen a surge of bacon related humor from some friends at about the same time I was doing some re-reading of the Hobbit. And I noticed Bilbo seemed to dwell on fond memories of bacon and eggs when he was wet, tired, hungry, lost in a cave, etc. I remembered the LotRProject's word-search capability and the rest, as they say, is history.

Of course he thinks of bacon, literally nothing in the entire world is better at raising your spirits than some bacon.

Scrambled eggs, banger sausages, kippers and bacon beat just bacon hands down.

I love English breakfast!
