Early on Tolkien considered Middle earth to be a alternate and fictional past for our world- roughly 6000 years before us. Later however, he rejected the notion an stated it was "at a different stage of imagination".

Sometimes, wikis can be dodgy though. Best not to overely on that information.. and the appendixes that take up half of the 2nd edition of RotK would solve your answer.

First, there was darkness, then, there was Alan and Brian, creating life.. er.. I mean the site...

Okay, now seriously. Tolkien wrote a little bit about what happened in the Fourth Age, the rest is unknown.

Actually, they didn't. And that's a horrible thought...

They stepped in and nailed up a sign saying 'Unda noo manajment.'

The King is dead, long live the King. Aragorn or Elvis, that's the question.

Eventually there was the Dagor Dagorath, the Battle of Battles, Where all servants of Evil and all Warriors of Good would be revived to fight one final battle.

Oh, that's irritating. I assumed it was called that because it as at the Dagorlad, or Battle Plain. I stand corrected. Thank you, Josh.

All joking aside, did it take place on the Dagorlad? I hadn't heard that, but then again I'm still trudging through The Silmarillion. :)

nope, It'll take place in Valinor,

btw there is only gonna be one man there, one who is kept in the Halls of Mandos for this only purpose!

And he will stand next to Eonwe en Tulkas en Earendil and deliver the final blow to the enemy

for more information: check my signature

further Tolkien also started a story in the Fourth Age, called 'The New Shadow', but unfortunatly only finished the first chapter, it was supposed to take place during the reign of Aragorns grand-child

I relie heavilly on 'The Peoples of Middle-Earth' for this information, it's one of a serie of 12 broadening books, actually appendices to all of Tolkiens work

EDIT: Longbottomleaf, the battle at the end of time has not happened of yet, because time still exists, watch your tenses :P

Really? I was under the impression that the world had already ended. I guess I'll just have to return to my street corner and continue to preach of the end of days... Now, where's that cardboard sign got to?
