I stumbled across these guys and apparently the box has a variety of weapons. So if one didn't include all the piratey stuff and guns do you think they would work as laketown militia?

I do not like them that much, I would advise using civilians and unarmoured warriors from the perry's metal range, they have a large variaty of unarmoured mini's which are super for laketown citizens, you cn use korean unarmoured, crusader etc. together they will look lake a nice band of unarmoured citizens of the multi cultural place laketown is/was.

MY favourites are :

Spear & handweapons

the armed pilrims along with the unarmed ones ( PERFECTfor diaroma & scenarios) You can check out other unarmed warriors, there are quite a few among the asian and mediavel era ranges.

If your vision of laketown is of a civilisation of giant mutants with swollen limbs, then go for it. As J.R. Says, you're better off, if you dislike the official offering, going for some historicals - plenty of rampaging peasants and ragtag militias to be had in a scale that fots the aesthetic of the range. GW's other games are way too Heroic Scale to do anything but look out of place next to sbg minis.

Perry miniatures are exactly way i am going for with lake town in future! Going to get those pilgrims and other crusade related miniatures. They are perfect fit with old lotr metals.

These are excellent suggestions!

I'll certainly think about getting them if I ever decide to make a Battle of Dale collection.

Sticky, I have those and they are huge compared to LOTR figures. Other than that they do make great militia!

I don't have any to compare to myself, but what I can say is there are different kinds of 28mm.

SBG is what's called True Scale - ie, it's all a realistic scale and everything is in proportion to everything else (or at least as much as feasibly possible).

WFB is Heroic Scale - the weapons, heads, limbs and details are all much larger proportionally speaking than they would be. This gives the model a much larger appearance compared to True Scale minis, but means that it's easier to paint in the details.

It's not really possible to convincingly mix them in the same colelction, IMO (with the odd exceptions, obviously, because there's always some exceptions. :))

I was thinking of using gripping beast dark age warriors to be ruffians. I was wondering what to do with the rest of the box but they should do for these guys as well. I have not got them yet but will get some scale photos up once I have.

Ah, the perry ones ought to be all right. Same sculptors, same scale. Can't see it going wrong - it's not like there's not a degree of variation in scale within the sbg range anyway. :)

Here some pictures, from left to right:
GW plastic Rohan warrior, Perry metal armoured Arab, GW metal Éowyn, GW plastic Empire Militia.
Perry figures fit straight in.. Warhammer figures not so much.

The Gripping Beast guys are the same size as their Arabs (some seperate arms in both sets are actually identical), which fit in pretty well too:

The Perry twins used to do Warhammer sculpts too.. don't think the (otherwise majestic, is must be said) WHFB Green Knight is much good in a LotR army because of that though. ;)

Hence the 'same scale' comment. ;)

And I do agree about the Green Knight, still one of the best WFB minis.

Thanks so much for the detailed replies! I didn't realise how different heroric scale was from LOTR's. Those Perry Miniatures look great! Especially the fleeing pilgrims, they really give a sense of refugee.

Sorry for the double post, but I have found a lot of good proxies:
Thanks guys. I've compiled a list of possible milita proxy models that I think will be far more suitable:
