Hello everybody! I wanted ask you three little things about the age of hobbits:
1) How old are Sam,Merry and Pippin? Are they younger than Frodo?
2) where is written their birth date?
3) does a 50 hobbit look like younger than a 50 human?
Thanks! :-D

1) They are younger than Frodo
2) It is written about the time Frodo sets out
3) It does not specify in books but I would guess younger as Hobbits live longer than humans
Sorry if I'm not accurate I'm saying this from memory :)

The Encyclopedia of Ard is a great quick reference point for this sort of information:

You can work out their ages for yourselves. Or cheat and read this link:

Their ages have already been clarified but yes Hobbits look (and technically are) younger than Men of the same age because they get older more slowly.

Of course it depends on whether the man is a Dunedain or not.

At Bilbo's 111th birthday party, Frodo was 33, which was his "coming of age" party. I think Tolkien was comparing this to 18 or 21 for normal humans. Merry and Pippin were irresponsible "tween-agers", in their 20s. And Hobbits lived to be 100 "as often as not", compared to normal human lifespans of 60-70.

Oh, I'm sure he knew that when he wrote the Lord of the Rings.

Average life expectancy in Tolkien's day was 60-70 years...IOW, "as often as not". Hobbit average life expectancy was 100, which is why he used the phrase "as often as not".
