Post subject:  First Paint-Off Miniatures

Since it is right at the beginning of December, I think that it would be possible to get in a shortened Paint-Off this month. I know that I will have quite some time on my hands during the Christmas holiday, so getting something painted shouldn't pose too great of a challenge.

I suggest that we choose a choose a miniature and run the first Paint-Off from December 6 until December 31. I understand that the short notice will mean that we probably won't have as many participants, but we can at least get the ball rolling.

What I'd like to do in this thread is for everyone that wants to participate to suggest at least two miniatures that they would like to paint. I'll keep a running tally of people's suggestions, and the winner will be our December Paint-Off miniature. The runner-up we can use for January. (You are allowed to second someone else's suggestion, and also to change your mind. If you change your mind just edit your post so that it is easy for me to keep track of who wants which miniature.)

My suggestions for miniatures:

Gandalf the Grey -- Everyone should have one of these laying around somewhere.
Cave Troll -- Fun to paint, and easily available thanks to the MoM boxed set.
One of the named Ringwraiths -- I've been itching to pick up some of these.

Oh this gotten started earlier than I'd imagined, in which case I'm pretty sure I could squeeze in this month :)

My votes:

Gandalf the Grey (Fellowship of the Ring)
or
Gimli (Heroes of the West)

My suggestions:

Théoden
Wild Warg Chieftain

I have both already primed and ready to paint, waiting for someone to nudge me into painting them. On the other hand I would like you select a miniature I don't already have so I'd have an excuse to buy more. :)

I vote for the cave troll and Gimli. Though does it have to be a specific sculpt?

Looking at the rules draft over in the other thread, I'm guessing that the Miniature chosen will be a specific sculpt, but if you don't have that version you're permitted to paint similar versions/miniatures instead.

I vote for Gimli (any version) possibly on dead uruk

and

Boromirs death vignette would be good to I think... suitable anyway, its cheap, involved and very detailed for a LOTR piece.

They'd probably be better off miniatures for next month so it's in advance notice as whilst they're great minis and good suggestions, there''s probably many people who don't have them who'd like to participate but need to order them first.

I agree with you Red Corsairs I do not have either of these models myself and although they are good for the purpose people would need notice so they could purchase the model if need be.

I say we get some suggestions for miniatures that really are suitable for this.. and then figure out which months they should be used for... thoughts?

Is the Gandalf supposed to be on foot or mounted?

I throw my vote in for Gandalf the Grey. :)

Why don't you alternate between Good and Evil models each month. Perhaps the Good ones could start with some of the Fellowship and then branch out into the other named characters (Faramir, Eomer, Elrond etc). And the evil ones could include a Ringwraith, Lurtz or Ugluk, Grima Wormtongue, Saruman, or a monster like the Warg Chieftain or a Cave Troll

Good Idea! I knew there was a reason I made you the boss.

I also like KJ Necromancer's idea that we just collect suggestions and then put it to a vote.

Running Tally
Good
-- Gandalf the Grey (Fellowship of the Ring)
-- Gimli (Heroes of the West)
-- Théoden
-- Dead Boromir
-- Faramir
-- Éomer
-- Elrond
-- Aragorn
-- Glorfindel

Evil
-- Cave Troll
-- Ringwraith
-- Wild Warg Chieftain
-- Lurtz
-- Ugluk
-- Grima Wormtongue
-- Saruman
-- Barrow-Wight

We'll collect suggestions for another day or so, and then put it to a vote starting on Friday and close the poll on Sunday.

It's a painting competition that's just starting up here on OR. Here is a thread which should describe it all for you. The last page has the rules. :)

Cool! I love painting competitions :) and I also love winning them

But I will not be participating in this round, since I have my hands full with some other figures, including a Warhammer 40k unit for the Bolter & Chainsword online painting comp.
