Mine was the fellowship boxed set that came out when the first movie did. I just couldn't resist!

Mines of Moria Starter set (still have) --> Everything you need for RoTK: orcs, WoMT, fountain guard, Mumak, uruk seige kit... --> sold 90% of my collection, long hiatus --> Isengard army --> working on Rohan army (compliments Isengard, different play style...)

After I finish my Rohan army I'll stop collecting. I think my biggest problem when I first started with this hobby is I bought FAR too many minis in a short period and it all became so overwhelming.

I think it'll feel good closing off the painting/collecting side of the hobby with a fully painted/focused Isengard force, Rohan force and a few extra minis to play scenarios with (MoM, Amon Hen...). Luckily, nothing in the Hobbit line interests me immensely. They don't seem to spark the same interest.

I desperately want to play more often (with people over 20 who appreciate theme preferably).

My very first model was a mounted Aragorn Elessar, to be used as a statue on my model railway (it is still patiently waiting for the model railway construction to begin).

I started acquiring models for gaming in April-May 2009 when the War of the Rings came out, with a vague idea of collecting models for the battle of the Pelennor Field. For some reason (I suspect it must have been a discounted price) my first purchased models were two metal ents, though. After that, I also got a lot of metal heroes from a local gaming store at a significant discount.

The idea about a full Lord of the Rings campaign germinated for a couple of years, and has been a guiding factor for my model purchases since 2011 or so, usually with large orders placed just before price hikes. Apart from a couple of companies' worth of Lake Town Guard bowmen and a couple of alternate pose evil heroes my armies are large enough now, even though I don't have any Dunlendings or all types of Uruks, for instance. My back log is horrendous, I'm afraid, so I will have plenty to paint (and write about in my WIP) all through this decade!

The first models I got were also the BGIME Goblin starter set.

I think I didn't touch them for about 3 weeks then all of a sudden loved them.

The thing I've collected most though is Uruk-hai - they're awesome!

Currently I'm working on a custom ranger/robin hood style force viewtopic.php?f=50&t=27421 and a numenorian fortress

I'm not sure, probably Elendil and either some metal numenorians or the plastic box, remember wondering what on earth I was going to do with them:
And now I play easterlings and the Last alliance, though at one point I did have a bit of a fumble with dwarves.

I remember my first box of miniatures simply because it's a moment of my life wrapped in the sweetness of nostalgia. It was Christmas 2004, and there in my hands was a freshly unwrapped boxed set of the metal Heroes of the West. The next day (Boxing Day) I spent the entire day assembling them, badly admittedly, there was a nasty bend in Faramir's sword that I could never quite fix, and then it snapped, so that was disappointing. But, not as bad as the inch-thick coat of gold paint I then practically smashed on to him.

As unbelievably poorly as I painted those miniatures, I still kept a few back, even after clearing out my collection numerous times. Looking at me right now in fact, is that old metal Gandalf the White, and Legolas and Eomer, the only survivors I'm ashamed to say. There's a reason I keep these three, the quality of the paint-jobs. They outshone my early miniatures, even though they remain the worst figures I've ever painted, although Gandalf's heavy coat of Skull White still shows a little bit of the groves in the beard if you look closely enough. They were a milestone for me, a symbol of my first footsteps in miniature Middle-Earth, and they're three things I will never forget. :)

I'm pleased to say they also slightly inspire me. They remind me of how not to paint, how not to assemble, and most of all, how much I have improved almost a decade since. I even paint pupils and individual hairs now, that's something only my wildest dreams would have conjured back in those days. I barely managed to hit Legolas' face with Elf Flesh (its all over his hair and collar), let alone steadily dot some black in the very centre of his eye!

I'd have more luck remembering my anniversary. (6th of November if you are reading this honey)

My brother in law had talked me into collecting and we agreed to do one bad and one good army each. I was to be Gondor and Isengard he was Rohan and Mordor.

The first purchase i remember was spending $20 Australian on ebay and i picked up a pile of figures from some mum selling off her kids unplayed with toys. I got about 20 uruks (shields and pikes) a uruk hai captain, lurtz, gandalf about 12 warriors of rohan, gamling, theoden, eowyn and a few others. Best deal i ever got in my life :D

My first models were Lurtz and a box of fighting Uruk-Hai in 2005. I'm still an Isengard obsessive!

My first miniatures were the fellowship of the ring, after that is was the last alliance starter set. I managed as kid to convince my Dad to buy me it cheap from a war game show, the actual box was torn to shreds and held together by duct tape. The miniatures inside were perfect though.

When I played with the models by myself I used to balance the points by adding Aragorn to the good side and using a demon statue from a dungeons and dragons box. Naturally the good side got a bit of a stopping!!

That is an interesting design for the mouth of Sauron, quite nice.

Intresting too see that there seems to be a trend of what people got for their first models. Lots of FOTR, warrior of the last alliance, Mines of moria, BGIME and ROTK sets. And quite a lot of uruks!

Most of those were good starter sets to get into. MoM was designed for that, as was BGIME. As for Uruks ... I don't know the reasoning in that, probably because TTT was the one with the massive memorable battles where both sides had over ten fighters :P

My first LotR mini was Gimli from the Mines of Moria boxed set. It was given to me by a GW staffer after he had noticed my interest in their LotR range on the shelf. He said for me to come back in a little while and they'd show me how to paint him up. Few years later and I had just started 40k but soon my interest in LotR was rekindled and I bought a box of Rangers of Middle Earth. I might post some pics of them compared with my latest stuff in the Members Progression Thread. Quite a difference!!!

Now I love collecting metals and am currently trying to complete my collecting list of metals from LotR. I like a lot of the Hobbit minis but find I still get drawn back to the Lotr line, probably because I prefer the LotR films a lot more and the minis just look better in a lot of cases and have an awesome "classic" feel.

My 1st models were the 12 Moria Goblins you got with the fortnightly "Battle Games in Middle-earth" Magazine from Deagostini (God they look awful now!). Then after the 3rd edition (Frodo) a friend showed took me to a Games Workshop store and I thought I had died and gone to heaven as I am a huge LOTR and Tolkien fan...

I was there every weekend, taking painting, scenery and gaming lesson's till finally I was invited to the Sunday club they had on at the time.
Which is where I spent a good 3-4 hours of my Sundays with like-minded enthusiasts battling it out over some part or middle-earth or re-enacting a battle scene or skirmish from the films or source books.

Still have a few of the magazines lying around and even Frodo in my collection.

Mine were the original Fellowship and the Warriors of Middle-earth back in 2001. I half painted them and then they sat mostly neglected until I got fully into the game sometime between TTT and RotK. I think it was the Shadow and Flame supplement that got me really hooked. Dwarves were always my favourite!
