Introduction: HQ Gaming Club in Sint-Niklaas (Belgium) has a quite new, but very enthousiastic LotR/Hobbit community. We were watching GBHL Deadliest Warbands series and wanted to do something alike, but bigger.
So we started tinkering about a 48 warbands, 'double elimination' tournament with 150 points warbands. We made 50+ warbands, trying to keep them as themed as possible. The results of that effort are in another topic on this forum.
While we were discussing which 48 warbands we were going to keep, GBHL launched their World Cup series, which offered an answer to many of our problems:
- we felt we didn't have 48 decent warbands, so now we could keep the 32 'best/most fun/themed' warbands - we didn't like the randomness of one unlucky game in the early stages, our 'double elimination' was a decent answer, but the group stages were an even better solution!
So we're stealing GBHL's idea (thanks guys, respect!) but we're also trying to improve on their idea. Even though they only had to come up with 16 warbands, there were some really 'below par' warbands in there (Dunland, Fiefdoms, Durin's Folk) which felt like 'fillers'. We wanted 32 warbands with at least a decent shot at surviving the group stage.
Rules for warband creation - 150 points warbands, not a point more - normal warband rules apply - at least 10 models in each warband (hero + 9 warriors) - no filth (Ferals, Watchers, Reavers ...) - only heroes can be mounted - regular warriors had to be 'infantry base', so no Half Trolls, Bat Swarms, Warg Marauders, monsters ... (we broke this rule for the "Wild Warg United" warband)
We have already finalised the warbands, I'll post them below.
We have performed a group draw, ensuring 2 evil and 2 good warbands ended up in each of the eight groups. I'll post the draw below.
We also have made up an elimination table. I'll post it below.
Community part As much as we'd love to, we simply don't have the time (or the ambition) to film, edit and publish all these games. But we'd love to keep everybody up to date!
How can you be a part of this? Below, you'll find all warbands, the group draw and the elimination table. Knowing all warbands and the possible obstacles on their way to eternal glory, which four warbands do you expect to see in the semi-finals?
We won't be playing the groups in the right order, we'll play them out as we get all models painted, so we can post the occasional picture of all games. We'll meet up with three friends (Masterfit and Dude are also registered users) and play all six games of a group in one evening. That way, we all get to play four out of six games in each group, randomly deciding who plays which warband at the start of each game.
We have arranged our first evening in two weeks. I'll let the first community reactions come in for now and announce which group we'll be playing next week. At that point I'd like all of you to predict the outcome of the group (ranking all four warbands).
Gentlemen, thank you for your attention so far. Now place your bets!
