Post subject:  Message from the moderators regarding third party miniatures

As we all know, Games Workshop recently made the decision to reinvigorate their interest in the future of our wonderful game and we have a fantastic new range of models and many years of future support to look forward to. Given this renewed support for the game, the site moderators have taken a serious look at the presence of unlicensed third-party miniatures on The One Ring.

Several independent companies have recently started producing and selling models specifically designed for SBG to fill in missing gaps in the existing model range, companies that hold no license from Warner Bros and thus have no legal right to do so - I won’t be giving examples, we’re all very well aware of the models and companies that I mean. Games Workshop holds the exclusive licence to produce miniatures at this scale based on the designs in the films and anyone else that produces such miniatures for commercial sale is operating illegally.

Recently, Games Workshop politely asked the community not to support the promotion and sale of these miniatures and so, after a discussion amongst the site moderators, we have decided that The One Ring will no longer allow threads that feature and/or discuss third-party, unofficial miniatures with the aesthetic of Games Workshop’s SBG range.

It’s worth clarifying that we are not in any way opposed to the discussion of using non GW models as SBG proxies. Similarly, we have no issue with companies that produce ‘generic’ models that could be used in any number of settings, including Middle-earth, indeed, there are any number of great companies out there producing eagles, trolls, orcs etc. which some players may wish to incorporate into our armies. We are exclusively banning the promotion and discussion of unlicensed models which are quite clearly designed specifically to be used as SBG models. These are often easily identifiable by the miniature’s name and the fact that these companies do not produce any models apart from those designed to be used in SBG. We are well aware that this is a subjective issue and one that we will have to judge on a case-by-case basis and this is exactly what the moderators will do.

Whilst this decision may disappoint some users, we hope that you will understand and respect our position and decision, we all love the game and are incredibly excited about the future - we’re keen to foster a good relationship with Games Workshop and ensure that The One Ring is not seen to promote any illegal activity. The One Ring is a wonderful forum populated by passionate Middle-earth gamers and hobbyists and we hope you all support us on this issue as we move into this fantastic new era for Middle-earth wargaming.

Thanks
