My daughter and I played the next scenario from the Scourging of the Shire. She took the hobbits again. She had 2 hobbit bowmen and 3 hobbit militia to hold off my 10 ruffians. I had to exit 6 of my ruffians off the Tookland edge of the playing area. To help her she had 24 booby traps. I took counters from Keltis the Oracle to represent them. She had 4 pits, 4 snares, 4 trip lines, and 12 dummies. Anytime I moved within an inch of the counters, I set them off.

I did a pretty good job of setting off the booby traps. Unfortunately for Kathryn, the traps were not very effective. I also believe she needed to set them up more densely to create some kind of kill zone. She was effective at predicting the path I would take. I rarely encountered dummies.

It took a while for us the close. I mostly gave up bow shots for movement. Kathryn got a few shots in, but usually missed or did not hurt me. Her militia was too weak to stand up to my mass of forces. I engaged them in 2:1 and 3:1. My superior Fight skill meant I usually won. In 2-3 turns her militia was dead. Kathryn finally got in two kills with her bowmen before I charged them. I killed one of my own with a bow shot that went wild. Then I simply overwhelmed her bowmen with my ruffians.

Looks fun, but even with the scenarion in their favour, I am doubtful that 5 hobbits could prevail against 10 ruffians.

The rules for the booby traps came from the Scourging of the Shire book (or whatever the English title is). Basically you have 3 types of traps: snares, pits, and trip ropes. They all activate on 2+ when an evil model moves within one inch. For snares you end up prone. For pits you fall in and are considered surrounded. To get out you have to jump. For trip ropes, you go prone and suffer a strength 1 hit. Decoys are simply removed.

As to 10 ruffians to 5 hobbits, I admit that the odds are stacked against them. It is very easy for the hobbit player to do something wrong and lose. However, even my inexperienced daughter managed to eliminate 3 of the 10. Two more losses and I would have lost. I would have tried to funnel the ruffians into a place where at least for the first few combats, I could outnumber the ruffians with my militia. I would also need a lot of shots on the ruffians as they try to slog through rough terrain.

The periscope idea I got from Terragenesis. It's a fun way to check LOS on a crowded table.

Here is the article: http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page231.html

I built mine out of styrafoam though.
