Post subject: | Vassal for Battle Companies |
I'm looking to start a battle companies campaign with some friends of mine. We're all busy with kids, work, etc. and won't be able to set a regular meeting time. I've seen people talk about the Vassal of the Ring module, but I can't find a download file anywhere except a mediafire link that I can't download without a premium membership to mediafire. Is there anyone on this board that would be able to the file or perhaps some knowledge on any alternatives out there? Your help is greatly appreciated! Quadro |

Sorry, I don't have it. But could you tell me what Vassal of the Ring is? |

The link is 11 years old and no longer functional in my usage, the only other mention that is easily found is found here: http://old.tabletop-hdr.de/rezensionen/vassal-of-the-ring/ This appears to be all that is left of "Vassal of the Ring": http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Lord_of_the_Rings_Battlegame A Dead End. |

Since there are only about 8 threads in this section, I am going to be a threadromancer before this section gets flooded! I am moving across the country, leaving behind my valiant gaming group that I playtested Battle Companies with. I would love to be able to do more than stay in touch and that would be to fiddle around with them still! Does anyone know anyone who could make a SBG Vassal Engine for this? |

I've only used it a couple of times, but have you checked out Roll20? I have used it to play Zombicide with some friends that live a few hours away, and it might be possible to modify it for SBG. I'd be interested to see whether or not it works. |

It's also possible to use a program called battle chronicler to play a game, I think it takes a little longer than roll20 as you have to email each turn, but it worked well enough for an attempt at a battle companies campaign a while back. |

I have "Table Top Simulator" on steam and people have made Warhamer 40k Modules for it. If I just write down what each 40k/fantasy model represents for SBG then that'll work! |

I have started to experiment with Roll20 for Battle Companies while I wait for my next Roll20 D&D session. I scaled a page to be a 4x4 board and the ruler to measure inches. I also have been successful in generating "sheets" for each test "model" with full stat-line as well as token Wound/Might/Fate tracker. If anyone wants screenshots or a tutorial, I can provide such things, though it is ridiculously easy if you have the skillset of a Tabletop Wargamer at your disposal. My first mate for Battle Companies back at my homestate has been itching to play so I will be playing virtual BC pretty soon, even if it will be only 1v1! (Just means we have to have more than 1 Battle Company! ) |

So weird to see this pop up! I was part of the team making VotR for Vassal years ago! Just a couple of months ago I found v4.02 on my hard drive (last released version) and started re-working it into v5. If anyone is interested in using it I can continue to update v5 and eventually release it? I won't re-release v4.02 as it's broken and doesn't work on the latest version of Vassal properly. Also, I'm pretty sure I can't release it on these forums and GW won't like it so apart from sending it privately does anyone have any ideas? Man, if you could bring Vassal of the Ring back then I am sure a lot of people would be floored. Even if people do not know about it, they will soon enough. Just look at X-Wing for Vassal, it is pretty darn popular in the X-Wing Community! I actually do not know a lot about VotR, but I am sure it is a lot more focused than trying to use Tabletop Simulator or Roll20? |

Well if there's some interest then sure I'll start work on it again. Not sure how long it could be until a first release because I have a number of projects at the moment but I'll see what I can do in the coming weeks. I think Vassal is a decent engine to use; obviously it's nothing like the real thing but if you don't live close to friends that play it then it's a good resource. Personally I think it works better than Roll20 for this type of game but TTS would be better for things like line of sight and elevation; only problem with that is the amount of time it would take to create/rip 3D models. Anyways, send me a PM with your Skype name if you have one and I can set up a discussion group for VotR and other people can join in if interested! |

@snoops If you PM a moderator, you can probably see if it would be acceptable to post a link to your download place or something on this website. I know Tabletop Simulator and Roll20 are methods to play tabletop games with your friends, so I am not sure it is breaching any policies... Especially since it is not for profit but for pure entertainment purposes. Programs like Vassal and Roll20 are welcomed by people like me who live an expensive amount of gas away from any hobby store or group. Yes, I could start one but my "neighborhood" doesn't quite go for these sorts of things at all. |

I understand what you're saying and Vassal itself would be completely fine to post here. However the mod 'VotR' is technically against GW's T&Cs and I wouldn't want ruffle any feathers. I do only update this mod for personal use so releasing it would have to be under the right circumstances. I'll continue to update it over the coming weeks and if any mods want to give any input in the time being that's cool. |

Directing any attention, that is interested in playing SBG online, to this post: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=33082 Tabletop Simulator is a method to play this game online in a 3-Dimensional space and we have just started uploading tons of models for SBG. Our stock includes Harad, Gondor, Orcs, Trolls, Elves, and even the Balrog. |
