Removing paint from white metal miniatures.

Hi,

haven't posted on the site in a very long time... also slowly getting back into the hobby.

I'm looking at removing paint from a Boromir of the white tower conversion I painted a very long time ago, any known tried & tested methods for removing the old citadel paints. He also has a plastic shield so can't be anything too corrosive.

Plop the mini in a cup filled with simple green. Let it soak for 18-24 hours and scrub off all the paint with a tooth brush. Simple green is useful for all your miniature paint removal needs no matter the material beneath the paint. I've been using it on all of minis for five years now.

I use dettol in the uk, smelly but works on plastic and metal.

Simple Green is good but won't work on everything. Certain paints are immune to it. Pine_Sol is the next step. It works on paints that SG can't remove.

The all time champion is brake fluid. If you can't get paint off after soaking it in brake fluid, it's not coming off.

The Brown stuff. I leave the figures in a jar of it for a few days. They scrub them with an old toothbrush with dettol on it. I then scrub them with cheap washing up liquid then finally wash them in water.

hi mate, you could also use pure acetone - you can buy it for £1 in most cheap beauty shops - I keep it in a jam jar with a tight lid ; 5 mins soaking in it and a quick go over with a toothbrush & they will look brand new

just remember to use it with the windows open & don't use it on plastic / resin 'cos it will melt them. Hope this helps :gandalf:

Cheers for the input matey, I did toy with the idea, but methylated spirit got me sorted in the end & was fine with plastic, was cheap but not as cheap as £1!

Metal figures ONLY - Nitromors, guaranteed to strip quickly.

A can will last forever, but not cheap and not green friendly - but it does the job. However if you rarely strip metal minis then this would be overkill unless you also use for DIY

I also put the figures in it in a glass (jam) jar, with airtight lid.

The best product is in my opinion "Biostrip20".

It works on metal and plastics and does the job super fast while not leaving a bad stench. It's not even harmful for the environment!

I usually put a couple of metal mini's together in a cup and fill it halfway up with Biostrip20. I let it stay there for an hour and then bring the mini's to the tap.
Then with warm water I wash off the Biostrip20 while scrubbing with a toothbrush. Within 1-5min (depending on the complexity of the model's angles) you can easily scrap off all paint of any model.

In 20% of the cases there are still a few spots left because of thick paint that had been under it or complex angles that couldn't be reached that easy. In those cases I just put them back in the dirty Biostrip20 leftovers from the cup and repeat the proces half an hour later.

It's really, really a great product and I use it all the time.

If you are really curious I could try to film it the next time I strip models to show you how easy it is.

Cheers, I just looked the stuff up on eBay. Not a bad price. Maybe when I next need to strip a miniature I'll give it a go.
