Super, I might have a go with a couple of mini's bought from eBay, which junk lots now look a much more tempting prospect!

Hi guys! I know about the acetone free method, but does non-acetone free nail varnish remover work for metals. I don't want to see Gil Galad melting away before my eyes...

You shouldn't have any problems with acetone and pewter. I would try it one a model that isn't as important to you. Even a bit of metal sprue would tell you if there are any problems.

I use a product called SuperClean which is a degreaser. I've forgotten about models sitting in it for over a month with no problems. Since the models are plastic it was a bit scary once I realized where I'd put them.
