For the Dwarf Holds competition, I'm planning on entering the spear dwarf, and just to be different I thought I'd give him auburn hair. Any idea on how to do this convincingly with not more then 2-3 highlights and not too advanced techniques (no featherblending and stuff), as that's a bit over my painting level...

Just use some layers of orange.
Begin with a basecoat of light brown, after that 2 or 3 layers of orange and a final highlight of a very dark yellow.

You could try basecoating with a yellow. water down some blood red and wash. lastly wash with watered down scorched brown.

I ended up using Pasi's article - in simplified version :). Any tips on how to end up with a darker tone would still be appreciated - you never know when it might come in handy.

There's a tutorial on cool mini or not about red hair. If you want I can try to dig up the article link. Failing that I have it somewhere on PDF (my internet is intermittant as I'm on holidays atm) that I could email/upload.

It's simple, just change the colour arrangement...
1. Basecoat of Scorched Brown (Rhinox Hide).
2. Medium Drybrush of Bestial Brown (Mournfang Brown).
3. 75/25 mix of Bestial Brown (Mournfang Brown) with Blazing Orange (Troll Slayer Orange).

To understand the 75/25 split, dip a paint brush in Bestial brown and transfer the paint to a pallet. Do this a 2nd and 3rd time.
Dip your brush into Blazing Orange and add to the pallet. Dip your brush into some water and use to mix all the components.

Hope this helps.

Oh dear! Thanks people, and thanks to the original poster as well. Not getting a nice enough looking auburn hair for my female soldier miniature has been holding me back on painting. I will give a go and perhaps get back into it. =D
