Is it me or does that Riddles in the Dark set look pretty off the mark?

It may just be me :)

As soon as someone gets the eagles we need a picture-review of the sprues, looks like their might be three heads and three sets of wings, just need to instantmold mold a torso, legs and wal lah!

I like the golumn pose, possibly my favourite of the many incarnations he's had. And the bilbo is not to bad, even if the paint jb looks sub par.

BUT from a gaming point of view, the boat is stupid, it looks ok but serves no purpose at all and even as diorama sets go I can see why they might include it but it isn't spectacular enough to justify the price.

I think both Gollum and Bilbo's faces/hair look subpar, the paint jobs don't help either. I do like Gollum's pose a lot, though.

If it was just Gollum alone I'd get him. The eagles I'm definitely getting, but not Gwaihir, the model's just not dynamic enough. I think I might make a golden collar for one of the eagles and call him Gwaihir (the dwarves made him a golden collar, did they not?)

Bilbo looks much better than he does in the leaked White Dwarf photos. I still don’t really like him though.

I like Gollum and the coracle though, it would make a nice objective marker.

My question with these new releases though, where are the dwarves?

My thoughts on the January releases:

Gwaihir – Pose is not suitably heroic to distinguish him from the other Eagles. An optional injured Thorin or mounted Gandalf would have tied into the movie/book, drawn collector's and made this kit a must-buy. $5 too expensive. Verdict: I'll be looking to other companies for a more dynamically posed eagle to represent Gwaihir.

The Eagles – Nice poses, plastic, and reasonably priced for a monstrous creature. Hopefully, they will be easy to convert. Verdict: Definite purchase, 2-3 boxes.

Fell Wargs – Nice kit with good canine body language. Unfortunately, one of the poses appears to be duplicated and I think they would benefit from a different paint scheme. $5 too expensive since they aren't cavalry. Verdict: Low Priority purchase due to my current Warg collection, 2 boxes.

Riddles In The Dark – Gollum looks great, although painted too flatly. Bilbo's pose is awkward, does not really capture this awesome film moment, and is altogether inferior to the EfGT Bilbo. The coracle is a nice addition for collectors and diorama builders but is not too terribly exciting. Overpriced by $10. Verdict: Pass, despite a decade in this hobby without a Gollum miniature in my collection.

So, after taking a thorough look at the new stuff, here's my take:

The Eagles:
Gorgeous, just gorgeous. 8) And actually quite reasonably-priced when you compare them to the old metal ones. I'll definitely get a box or two at a discount. :-D

Gwaihir:
Seriously, did the sculptor ever take a look at what a soaring eagle should look like or was he drunk?! Oo That thing is hideous! The leg proportions are so off it looks like he's got talon elephantitis!

Gwaihir's legs:

"Normal" soaring eagle legs:

And then he's only 5€ cheaper than TWO gorgeous (did I say they were gorgeous? :-D ) plastic eagles. The biggest pass imaginable from me!

Fell Wargs:
The models are nice enough, but the fact that it's an absolute rip-off that you're basically forced to get these in addition to the mounted Hunter Orcs (when the old wargs did not have the riders' legs stupidly molded on) would have led me to boycott this dick-move even if I did play Orcs, which I don't. Definite pass.

Riddles in the Dark:
PfffthahAHAHAHA, they're nuttier than squirrel poo!! 30€ (!!!) for three hobbit-sized minis?! Ah me, they really should become comdedians! ... what? ... They ain't kiddin'? ... Wow. That's just weak. As is anyone who conciously buys this, IMHO. If you're intoxicated at the time of purchase, ok, if not: you're being ripped off! I'm not much of a drinker, so pass.

I love the whole Lord if the Rings world, I have since I was very young.
I also love miniature figures, again since a young boy.
I actually like the new figures, the eagles, the warg, the Riddles inthe dark - if you've seen the film Bilbos pose is awkward in that having never held a sword!
I like the white council etc from the last release....
...how much have I bought?
NONE!

Why? The cost - really? £20 for two tiny figures and a boat?
GWS are pricing everything way too high... I earn a decent salary and my son is starting to get into SBG also, but I refuse to pay what they are charging!

Come on GWS bring the prices down to a realistic level and let us start buying them again!
