Post subject:  WD rumour of Rohan and Isengard reinforcements.

Well, seeing as the latest WD revealed that both Rohan and Isengard would be getting reinforcements, I'm curious to see what you all think this means. Is it going to be similar to the Fallen Realms release, with new models for the Easterlings, Haradrim and errr... Mordor, or do you think it will be more like the Mordor release, a new sourcebook and a bunch of new minis?

Personally, I'd love to see a sourcebook, with new and updated army lists. Now, most of the previous sourcebooks have contained a mix of Good and Evil lists, whilst only 3 (Mordor, Gondor in Flames and Harad) have dealt with one exclusively.

I'm thinking (hoping) perhaps 6-7 lists, probably from the following -

The Rider's of Eorl
The Host of the Hammerhand
Theoden's Host
Fangorn (?)
Isengard Raiders
The Legions of the White Hand
Dunland

That covers pretty much all the options for Rohan and Isengard, Sherkey's Rogues being covered in The Scouring of the Shire, and opens up quite a large list of unreleased models (not to mention, any new WotR models).

Let's see -

Mounted Kings of Men
New Rohan Captain models (Throwing Spears etc)
Re-release of the BGiMe Rohan Royal Guard Banner Bearer
Helm Hammerhand
Helm's Guard
Mounted Hama

Quickbeam
Beechbone
Huorns

Uruk-hai Scout Captains
Warg Rider Banner Bearers
Mounted Saruman and Grima
New Uruk-hai Captains
Royalblood Chieftains of Dunland
Wild Man Chieftains
Royalblood Huscarls
Dunland Berserkers
Dunlending Horsemen.

That's just from the lists in Legions of Middle-earth. War of the Ring gives us -

Riders of Rohan and Royal Knights Hornblowers
Rohan Royal Guard Command
Sons of Eorl Command
Potential of new models to represent - Erkenbrand's Raiders, Theodred's Knights, Grimbold's Helmingas or Elfhelm's Riders (Hey, it worked for Shagrat...)
At the very least, Grimbold and Elfhelm.
Deorwine.

Uruk-hai Drummers
Ruffian Taskmasters (could get confusing, as a lot of them already have whips)
Mauhur (and possibly his Marauders)
Thrydan Wolfsbane.

All in all, a pretty healthy list of models that have yet to see the light of day, and that is without entertaining the possibility of something completely new altogether.

Of course, any good sourcebook should have some scenarios, either historic re-fights, or what if's, so I could see updated versions of the Siege of Helm's Deep and the Fall of Isengard. New models means they will publish new historical participants, handily enough in multiples of 3. Or 8.

Maybe some new scenarios from the time of Eorl the Young and Helm Hammerhand. A handful of Riders clearing the area of Orcs and Wargs before the civilians are cut down, that sort of thing.

So, discuss away, indulge my curiosity a bit, and well, let's see if anyone makes any uncannily accurate predictions.

Hopefully it's the scoursebook, as Mordor's.

You forgot the Rohan peasants using their cottage doors for shields.

Helm Hammerhand and his folks definitely seem like they'll be released, the others look hopeful too. Though I have no use for more ents......but Helm sounds cool.

No, to make up for this they'll discontinue the current ruffians and release more WITHOUT whips! That, or else give the taskmasters whips as disproportianate as the shields of the Black Guard.....

i hope it will be a sourcebook like the journeybooks or scouring of the shire and stuff(with terrain guides etc) but i think it wont happen

my guess is that gw'll release only the wotr models
so that'll be new commandsets for the royal guard, urukhai drummers, son of eorl captain etc
maybe some new named heroes

and i hope for plastic dunledings, but i dont see it happen, as well as new plastic uruks and rohan warriors

There's also the Dunlending Horsemen that are yet to be released (from the WOTR book) and scout captains would be more appropriate then having armoured uruk-hai trying to keep up as they're running through the woods.

Plastic Dunlendings would be amazing and I would definitely pick up a couple sets. (On the new TLA, someone said that a GW worker mentioned something about having them as plastic.) I'm sure they'd release the horsemen, but if they're metal...I'm gonna be really mad :-X

Don't hold me to this, but I vaguely remember someone on TLA mentioning they had a chance encounter with Mat Ward at a Games Day or the like, and he reportedly told him that there were not going to be any more sourcebooks for the SBG; all of the rules are supposedly going to be published in WD. That's okay, ecspecially if you have a subscription, or can get it for free when it is published on the website in a few months. But I'm in favor of a new sourcebook. Nothing in WD can compare to the quality or extra material in a sourcebook, unless GW were to devote an entire issue to the army (which they have not done so far  ).

Still, the miniatures released with this set should be better than those released for Fallen Realms! 8)

GW is turning their backs on the SBG? That's just foolish of them, if they concentrate on WotR, they will loose customers, aswell as frighten newcommers.

It's easier to atract new people with the SBG, as it's a lot cheaper, then when they get larger armies they can start thinking of starting WotR. If I went for the first time to a GW store and they say "You need 4 boxes of warriors, as well as some commanders, plus movement trays and whatnots", I'd probably not start with it, but if they say "You can start off with just a pack of warriors and a hero", the chance increases that they will begin at all.

Besides, movement trays limits the gameplay, sure it's faster to move and such, but you need companies instead of each warrior on their own. The reason I switched from WH Fantasy to WH40K was because I prefered the Coheracy Rules before the trays, and then to LotR SBG as you make your army on your own, down to every warrior and shield.

Besides I don't like what I saw of the WotR fighting in the store (The girl who tried to show my father how it worked was hillarious, to qoute my father; "That girl could probably sell sand in the desert".) - But that the one with priority rolls first, and then the second, slowly grinding down the two trays against eachother. I like that in the SBG, a warrior who wins the fight is safe until next fight phase, in WotR it's like a 18th century war, just picking down warriors until one side is wiped out, it feels unrealistic and dull.

Anyhow, I hope that there'll be some plastic Rohan releases, I'm thinking of making a Rohan or Isengard secondary force. (I'm happy with the Uruk-Hai warriors and scouts, I don't see what else is needed in plastic tbh.)

Rohan feels quite limited though, just having riders or warriors in plastic. Not sure what else to add, but they need something. I'd want some new pices and bitz for the Rohan Riders, some of their helmets looks plain silly.

Sounds good, but It seems really unlikely that they will bring out new uruk hai just for Mauhur. They already have plastic scouts.

Dunlending command etc will probably be there.

For some reason, i doubt they will cover mounted musicians though :/

hornblowers on horse, good idea

but in the wd with the rules of hornblowers it is said they wont cover all the kinds of hornblowers(like hornblowers for the elites)

i hope there'll be new plastics^^

but someway i think it'll be a all-metal release like this one:3

Nah, ignore me. I'm thinking they were Shagrat's Tower Guard, not the Black Guard...

i agree, WOTR sounds a bit toooo big to me, i like th idea of jst individuals fightin as individuals rather thn groups fightin as a group, it jst makes more sense to me...

I wouldn't mind the Rohan Infantry (Plastics) to be redone. They were nice enough figs, but much smaller than many of the other sets.

I'm really hoping they revisit the Last Alliance some time. I would love to see new Men of Gondor/Arnor and new 2nd age elves.

From GW's point of view, cheaper is not a good thing. The only time they want cheaper is when they are selling some sort of incomplete starter set. So to GW, WOTR's expense is a feature, not a bug.

And at this point, the whole property is at a point in its cycle where its probably not gaining new players. There's a marketing term for this, which it's too early to recall. But the idea is that after a while you sell things to existing customers to try and get as much cash out of them before the end of the product cycle.

Personally, I think its fine to have "mass" combat rules for LOTR, but WOTR is far from perfect. I've been working, on and off, on my own conversion of the rules to cut out the dice pool mechanic and maybe give each warrior a bit more of a chance of survival (probably making it easier for formations to hang together).

Anyway, the upshot of all this is that I would be very surprised to see too many more plastic sets in the future.
