Post subject:  Hobbit Movie news

I got my Total Film through the door today - it contains an interview with Guillermo del Toro who drops a few bits of info on the movies. Apologies if this is all old news, but hopefully it will be of interest to some people. I'll give a few key quotes:

Structure of the films
Quote:
"We are respecting the structure established by Professor Tolkien because the order of the adventures in the Hobbit is well known...But we will be integrating Gandalf's comings and goings because he does disappear in the book quite often."

So that looks like the Hobbit and the taking of Dol Goldur running parallel through both films.

Total Film: " Will the sequences involving Smaug and the spiders be genuinely scary?
Quote:
I think so. I hope so. At least that's the way we're approaching it...there is no way to have a dragon attack a town that's not scary...there is no way of maing giant spiders cocooning people so it would be gentle!"

Apparently the spiders will not be like Shelob as she was ground dwelling and they are canopy dwelling, and they will be more creatures of the shadow, whatever that means. And Smaug took about a year to design and is different to any dragon ever made before. (Which we have heard before I think.)

Quote:
We are not trying to make a quadrilogy or a pentology. We're trying to make two films that flow with those but that stand on their own completely. We want to avoid stuff that is not part of the DNA...but we don't want people to feel "We've seen this." Except where that familiarity is comforting, like Hobbiton or Rivendell."

He has already stated that Wargs will look different, but this suggests that a lot of things will be a different style to the previous films.

Finally some quotes suggesting the feel of the films:
Quote:
"I think the Hobbit is a bit more colourful. And a bit more operatic. And whimsical."

Operatic? Singing orcs anyone?

Quote:
"It has a little bit more flamboyance"

Just over two years until we see it ourselves.

Thanks; even though interviews of this kind are usually relatively useless to gain new info as the interviewee is always so reluctant to give away spoilers, I did enjoy reading it.

So, is the second Hobbit movie going to be called The Hobbit 2, or a more clever title such as The Fall of the Necromancer?

perhaps they can call 1 of them 'There and back again'...? would be cool I guess^^
but nice article indeed (:

The Hobbit itself was subtitled "Or, There and Back Again", so that would be the "authentic to the book" movie.

Maybe the second one could be called "The Hobbit 2: The Rise of the Machine-Hobbits" or something equally silly.

I am willing to bet the first one will be smashing, but the second will be ok but off the mark. Kind of like when the bloody Elves and Haldir show at Helm's Deep. Just watching I felt a little bit of up-chuck in my mouth. Ugh.

Del Toro is a good director, let's hope he call pull this off... ... ...

I can't wait to see the battle of the five armies. I hope they do it justice, but with Del Toro and Jackson I get the feeling they will at least go some way.
Will the attack of the Wargs and Orcs be akin to the Charge of the Rohirrim ?
For me that was probably the greatest piece of cinematography ever, so I hope it comes somewhere close.

They can just call the first one: There...
And the second one: ...and back again.

Or they can call it: Episode 4 and really s**** with people.

watch out what you say, they might do it xD
episode 4: a new... erm... story?
part 2, episode 5: the Dragon strikes back..?

(oh my, I'm really bad in making titles.. >.<)
but let us hope they don't go that way and indeed s**** with people! :s
we'll see... (:

I've edited the previous two posts as I deemed inappropriate language was used for a family friendly site with potentially younger members.

How does this sound? The Hobbit: There and Back Again and The Hobbit: The Fall of the Necromancer.

I like it, does anyone else? :-D

The movies are going to run both the stories side by side so calling them "There and Back Again" and "Fall of the Necromancer" will make no sense.

Maybe "Shadows over Mirkwood" would describe the second one better? Not sure about the first though.

Why do they always have to release these things SO FAR IN THE FUTURE???? :-X

I'm really looking forward to these movies, though.

Yeah, that's what they said about Saphira in the Eragon movie. Gosh, that movie was a total letdown....I hope The Hobbit lives up to LOTR instead of falling to the level of the junk that the Eragon movie was.

Oooh, leaked info! :-D If you get some, you're going to start thousands of Internet rumours even though is a reasonably small forum. This could end badly. :P

Meesa Smaug-smaug Binks! Nope, doesn't quite work... None of the Dwarves seem appropriate for the role either.
