I'm surprised this wasnt announced sooner with all the demand there has been for it. It's split into two movies so it should be good. With Jackson on board as well and the same design/production team as LOTR we should have two excellent films :D

I have to agree this is awesome news. I had originally heard that Jackson wasnt going to be involved. But with is involvement and having seen pans labyrinth this should work out excellent oh and WETA involved.... WOOT.

Here is a little guess - PJ always likes to appear in the movies, so I am hoping that 2 dwarves, probably in Dain's entourage at the Battle of The Five Armies, just might look a little familiar...

Wonder if they need anyone to deal harshly with goblins?

Good stuff. On TORn's front page I think it says McKellen is doing Gandalf (well, as we all had hoped/expected).

Quote from Dorths linked article "According to studio New Line, the first film will be an adaptation of The Hobbit and the second will be an original story focusing on the 60 years between the book and the beginning of the Rings trilogy".

Well that gives us somthing to think about, an original story spanning sixty years! It will be awsome to have a film where you havn't pre-read the story. :D

an original story?...

sounds suspiciously like

FAN-FICTION!

Oh well...

As long as PJ, FW, and the WETA team are on board, it can't be THAT bad...

You might think of it as being awesome, but I don't like the sound of it... :?

While 60 years is fine on paper, it does not sit so well on film. PJ truncated the period from Bilbo's 111th birthday to Frodo & Sam fleeing the Shire to what looked like a few months, possibly 1 year whereas it was actually about 17:

From The Encyclopedia of Arda:
Quote:
In 3001, Bilbo held the great Birthday Party on 22 September (a birthday Frodo happened to share) and afterwards departed from the Shire, leaving Frodo to come into his inheritance, including (after much persuasion by Gandalf) the Ring.

After Bilbo's departure, Gandalf visited Hobbiton only occasionally. Frodo often went walking in the Shire, sometimes with his friends Folco Boffin, Fredegar Bolger, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, but more often alone. His gardener at Bag End was Samwise Gamgee, who was to accompany him on his great journey.

On 12 April 3018, Gandalf returned, having discovered the truth about the Ring, and so Frodo discovered the history behind the One Ring, and the great danger it held. He resolved to leave the Shire with it. To cover his departure, Frodo sold Bag End to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, and bought a small house at Crickhollow in Buckland, the region where he had been brought up. He departed from Hobbiton with Peregrin Took and Sam Gamgee on 23 September 3018, the day after his fiftieth birthday.

Now 60 years is 60 years, whatever way you look at it but I suspect that only a few crucial events will be covered, taking the bulk on the screen time, and my feeling is that Aragorn's travels, Gandalf's journeys, maybe something of the Thorongil period (bringing in Denethor and Thengel) would be likely. And Gollum will be there as well, slipping out of the caves and seeking The Precious.

We may even meet the Balrog again!

That could be right Dortholion!
PJ also said in the audio commentary of the first film that it would have been
cool to do Gandalf and Aragorn looking for Gollum, but it just didn't
fit so well into the movies.

It could be just a story that happens in the 60 years between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring and not the entire 60 year span.

I don't want to be too euphoric (?) about all this news, as I've read masses of 'official' news in the past years... and I don't want to spoil the fun now...
.. but this time it looks for real (like a few other times, but even just a little more again)...

So I'll just cross my fingers all of this is true and I really hope those movies will see my living-room-light before I take my ship to never come back..

Agreed. He is a very good choice for Director. I personally favor Pans Labyrinth.
